Teen Tech Week at West Jefferson High School’s library took place March 5th– March 9th this year in conjunction with the national week of observance. The theme this year was “Libraries Are for Creating”. This year’s celebration was particularly exciting. Besides the customary Teen Tech Week Bingo where students completed a row of tech related activities, a new and exciting feature was added by our very own Business instructor and LACUE Teacher of the Year, Ms. Valerie Burton. On Thursday, March 8, 2018, students attended a day of virtual reality and coding in the library that was arranged and facilitated by Ms. Valerie Burton. Ms. Burton in-serviced her students Bradley Meunier, Asleigh Laws, and Braulio Barralona,
to serve as peer tutors and coaches to the Teen Tech Week participants who eagerly participated in the activities.
The activities included students exploring virtual realities that existed literally in the palms of their hands through the use of Merge Cubes. Students were also introduced to coding with an interactive lesson from at Code.org. Prizes donated by Ms. Burton, were given to participants whose names were placed in a prize drawing for participating. Mohammad Taha and Valencia Winston were the lucky winners of brand new Merge Cubes. Leona Price won a CODE labeled bag, and Madison Aikens, and Jessica Ramirez won CODE notebooks. Every participant received a CODE sticker and refreshments to enjoy as they completed the activities, but more importantly, they received experiences and new found realities that, as student Dailah Toney put it, “changed her life”.
Teen Tech Week winners of the Teen Tech Bingo Challenge were Gabriel Puentes and Chris Burbank.
Congratulations to Semaj Robinson and Dailah Toney for winning 1st place at their respective lunch block’s Digital Citizenship Kahoot Competition on Friday, March 9, 2018. The winners of those competitions won ITUNES cards worth $10.00 each.
Thanks are extended to Ms. Valerie Burton, her student tutors/volunteers, and to all of the students who participated in this year’s Teen Tech Week @ West Jeff.
