September 19-21 were educational, enriching, and inspiring days spent by a team of West Jeff teachers and administrators at the 2017 RTI conference in New Orleans. The underlying premise of RTI is that schools should not delay in providing help for struggling students until they fall far enough behind to qualify for special education, but instead should provide timely, targeted, and systematic interventions to all students who demonstrate the need. It is a three tier process that involves core instruction, supplemental interventions, and intensive interventions with a focus on student learning and a rigorous core curriculum. Attendees included Ms. Brown-Lewis, Ms. Carter, Ms. Doroski, Ms. Williams, Ms. Blanche, Mr. Ross, Ms. Washington, Ms. Peters, Ms. Hobbs, Ms. Davis, and Ms. Perkins. The team will be sharing what they learned with the rest of the staff in the coming weeks.
