About Us
During the administration of Superintendent Lemuel W. Higgins, the Jefferson Parish School Board purchased the site on which West Jefferson High School now stands.
In the fall of 1955, the doors of the West Bank’s first consolidated high school were officially opened. The first principal was Mr. Joseph J. Martina, and the first assistant principal was Ms. Lucile Cherbonnier. One thousand, two hundred students (1200), and forty-two (42) teachers attended. On May 26, 1956, the first graduating class of 283 received their diplomas on the stage of the school’s auditorium.
During the years that followed, inevitable changes occurred. As its student body and faculty grew in size, so did the West Jefferson facility. Extensive additions and renovations have made West Jefferson one of the largest high schools in the state.
West Jefferson High School is located near the Harvey Canal on the west bank of the Mississippi. It borders the West Bank Expressway and is just ten minutes from downtown New Orleans. Its students are drawn from nearby Gretna and Harvey neighborhoods.
